Stop the stigma: Addressing menopause in the workplace
Executive Summary
Menopause stigma remains a significant barrier to workplace inclusion and equity, silencing conversations and limiting support for affected employees. Our research highlights how stigma fosters embarrassment and isolation, leading to productivity loss and talent attrition. Globally, 35% of women experiencing menopause perceive a stigma against talking about it in the workplace, and 72% have hidden their menopause symptoms at work at least once. Many women feel unable to discuss menopause at work due to fear of judgment, embarrassment, or that it will impact their career. This silence perpetuates misinformation and reinforces workplace inequities, particularly for women in mid-to-late career stages. Addressing this stigma is not only a moral imperative but also a strategic priority for fostering an inclusive culture. HR and DEI leaders must take the lead by normalizing menopause conversations through awareness campaigns, providing education to reduce bias, and implementing inclusive policies that support affected employees. Tackling menopause stigma helps organizations retain experienced talent, improve engagement, and signal their commitment to creating equitable, inclusive workplaces for all employees.
